FAQ
What is DRM?
DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, and is a way for publishers to control who can read the purchased eBooks, and to restrict what can be done with them. This prevents eBooks being copied and distributed, although the reader software will allow a small number of PCs/devices to read the eBooks you buy (subject to the correct activation details being used when the reader is installed). In some cases the DRM is also used to prevent copying or printing the entire eBook. For each eBook we include a simple guide to what you can and cannot do - just select the format from the list provided and the ticks and crosses underneath the prices will be updated to show what the restrictions are. All eBooks sold by ereadable.com use DRM.
What do I need to be able to read eBooks?
You'll need a PC, Laptop or mobile device that supports ebook reader software. The books we supply are available different formats; Adobe PDF, Microsoft Reader and Palm, each of which requires its own eBook Reader software. The good news is all the software
required is free. See our quick guide to
getting your computer/device ready for eBooks.
Which download format should I choose?
That depends on the method in which you intent to read your eBook. Please see the
comparison chart.
Why do I get a file named ebx.etd when I download an Adobe PDF eBook?
When you start to download an Adobe PDF a small file called ebx.etd is first downloaded. This is used by Adobe Reader / Digital Editions to send the activation ID
to the delivery server which will use that ID to generate an encrypted PDF eBook, which is then downloaded to your reader software. If your computer is asking you where
to save the ebx.etd file then your Adobe Reader / Digital Editions may not be installed correctly or not yet activated. Often you can solve this issue by simply setting
your computer to always use Adobe Reader / Digital Editions to open this type of file (in Windows XP, for instance, right click on the file and choose Open With, select
Digital Editions or Adobe Reader 7.x - depending on which you are using to read eBooks - and tick the box to tell Windows to remember the setting; for other
operating systems please read your documentation).
Why do I have to Activate my Reader?
Most eBooks have built in security in order to protect the eBooks copyright. You are required to activate your software before downloading to identify that you are the
rightful owner of the book.
Can I download eBooks onto my hand held device?
This depends on both your hand held device and the operating system it is running. Most modern devices are
compatible with one or more of the readers, please see the comparison chart for full
details.
I've downloaded my eBook, how do I read it later?
Once you have downloaded your eBook you should not need to download it again. To open the eBook again after the initial download, simply do the following:
- Adobe Reader - go to the File menu, choose Digital Editions, and then My Digital Editions, and you will be presented with your eBook library.
- Adobe Digital Editions - just open Digital Editions, and you will be presented with your eBook library or the last eBook you were reading.
- Microsoft Reader - just open Microsoft Reader, and you will be presented with your eBook library or the last eBook you were reading.
- eReader - just open eReader, and you will be presented with your eBook library, and the last eBook you were reading if it was still open when you closed eReader.
I've downloaded my eBook, where is the file so I can make a backup?
The location of the file on your PC is dependent upon which format it is in, and what operating system you are using.
- Adobe Reader/Digital Editions, Windows - the PDF file will be in the My Documents\My Digital Editions folder.
- Adobe Reader/Digital Editions, Mac OS - the PDF file will be in the Documents\Digital Editions folder.
- Microsoft Reader - the LIT file will be in the My Documents\My Library folder.
- Palm, Windows - the PDB file will be in My Documents\My eBooks.
- Palm, non-Windows - we are not sure at the time of writing where the file is stored.
In the future should you lose your eBook file(s) (for instance, if your hard disk fails) then you can open them again from the backup copies so long as you use the same software and activation profile (for Adobe and Microsoft format files), or in the case of Palm format files enter the name and credit card number used to buy the eBook.
Can I read my eBook on a portable device?
Once you have downloaded your eBook to your PC, you just need to use the appropriate method to copy it to your portable device (subject to compatiblity with the reader software and DRM encrypted eBook support).
- Adobe Reader - use the Adobe Reader for Mobile Devices software and add the eBook PDF from your library to the transfer list - it will then be converted to a format suitable for your mobile device and copied to it.
- Adobe Digital Editions - Digital Editions does not currently support transferring eBooks to a mobile device, you must download the eBooks using Adobe Reader 7.0.9 and transfer using Adobe Reader for Mobile Devices
- Microsoft Reader - You need to use ActiveSync to transfer the eBook, for more information see the Microsoft Reader Overview.
- eReader - just copy the eBook to your mobile device and open it with the eReader software, you will need to enter the authorisation data on the first opening.
Can I print and copy my eBooks?
The majority of eBooks are in Adobe PDF format and can be printed and copied, however each eBook has specific security and print restrictions
imposed by the publishers which are displayed on the eBook details page. Please
check these meet your requirements before you purchase a title. Microsoft Reader and Palm eBooks can not be printed.
